1928 Bentley 4½ Litre 4-seater
Chassis No. TX3237
Engine No. TX3237
Registration No. YW 8255 / CA 8551
1928 4.5 Litre, Reg. No: CA 8551, Engine No: TX3237, Chassis No: TX3237
This very original car was first registered as YW 8255, and belonged to Mrs Dowd of Mayfair, London. It has a long bonnet, "D" type gearbox, and first arrived in Wynberg, Cape Town in 1949. It was then sold to Ralph Rohr of Cape Town who kept it until 1968. It was then sold to Ian Thompson of Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal. John purchased it from Ian in 1987 and spent a long time in Durban rebuilding the engine, which had been started by Ian after it broke a con-rod on the 1983 Bentley Tour of South Africa. John was most fortunate to have the help and expertise of John Harmsworth to assist him with all the intricate parts of the engine assembly. A few years ago John took it to England and then toured France and entered a few historical races at Angouleme, as well as going round the Le Mans circuit.
It was on the 2001 & 2006 Tour of South Africa.
