Richard Marker bought 'Old Mother Gun' in 1932 and fitted a 2 seat body for track racing, probably the one fitted to YV 7263 for the 1931 500 Miles Race. Subsequently the body seen below was fitted in 1934, being the body used on Chassis No. 1106 by Froy in 1928. As seen above (photo 1), the original 4½ Litre engine is still fitted (exhaust on the near side). This engine was removed after the 1934 500 Miles Race when the flywheel sheared the end of the crank. A 6½ Litre engine was fitted by Bowler, based on crankcase LB 2345, ex Chassis No. LB 2338, the ex-Prince George Imeritinsky Speed Six which was salvaged after an accident by Bowler in 1934. It is possible that this engine incorporates some of the Speed Six engine of 'Old No. 1' Unfortunately the 4½ engine seems to have been scrapped - it would have been interesting to have seen it, as it was by then fitted with the bottom half of engine EXP 6 from Hubert Pike's 3 Litre saloon Chassis No. 238. ST 3001 became the Bentley-Jackson over the winter of 1936/7 when R.R. Jackson rebuilt her in the form seen overleaf (photos 2, 3) on a new frame, with a new body. In this form the Bentley-Jackson set her fastest lap at 134.97 mph, driven by Kitt Baker-Carr. The remains were acquired by Vaughan Davis Esq., who is rebuilding this motor car in her latter guise, as seen here (photo 1).

Accompanying text reads: Miss Margaret Allen in Richard Marker's 6½-litre Bentley during the Second Short Handicap at the 1936 Opening Meeting. She lapped at 119.15 m.p.h., but was unplaced. On another occasion, she lapped at over 120 m.p.h. in the car, and Marker at 129.36 m.p.h.

According to original Vanden Plas Coachbuilder records, this car was originally fitted with Body No. 1379 with a Sports for Le Mans (first production 4'/2 litre); Weymann grey fabric / green; 5/1927. Effectively 4 1/ 2 Litre prototype Team car known as "Old Mother Gun". Michael Hay, in his book Bentley: The Vintage Years, 1997, states: "Vanden Plas body no. 1379. Known as "Old Mother Gun". Had three frames during racing career. Evolved into the Bentley-Jackson, with Speed Six engine LB 2345 ex LB 2338, special frame and single-seater body. See Bentley-Jackson under "Non-production Chassis". Parts of original 4½ used to built bitsa - was 9'9 ½" frame, MK. VI Bentley engine and gearbox, Gurney Nutting saloon, now rebuilt on 10'10" frame, replica of 1927 form, Vanden Plas body by Wilton, 4½ Litre engine." |
