2. "John King's photograph was taken at Makarora during the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand's 1972 International Rally. The Bentleys are Bob Beardsley's 4½/3 litre, chassis SL3065, and Geoff Owen's 3 litre, chassis 1215. The chap in Gents' Natty Shirting is John's co-driver, Peter Felton. Your editor was supposed to have filled that role, but got married instead."

Photographed after competing near Nelson. This 4½ litre, chassis SL3065, was originally registered in December 1927 to Mrs Cholmeley as a Gurney Nutting saloon, but known here with a Maythorn coupé body. A 3 litre engine and radiator were fitted later, along with a Vanden Plas style tourer body, and after Dave Bowman’s and Bob Beardsley’s ownerships it passed to Brian Wright, who has reinstalled a 4½ litre engine and gearbox. The 3 litre is chassis 1060/613, 100 mph radiator, now in Wellington."

This 3L which had been rebuilt by Dave Bowman of Christchurch, was purchased about 1980 by Terry Wilson of Timaru from Bob Beardsley of Christchurch. Later sold to Brian Wright of Christchurch who installed a 4.5L engine, it is currently (?) owned by R M Moody of Picton. This photograph shows Barry Goodman at the wheel.
