Vintage Bentleys crossing Europe in Bentley Calista Rally
(Posting on Motor Trend by Rory Jurnecka on May 9, 2007)

"Mirroring the type of event that the original Bentley Boys might have undertaken, the Bentley Calista Rally 2007 began this past Saturday in London.

The cadre of 16 vintage Bentleys will cross Europe along a 4,000 kilometer route, making numerous stops along the way, with the event reaching its conclusion in Turkey. Once there, a stop is planned at the new Bentley dealership in Instanbul before heading on to the finish line in Belek, a renowned Turkish resort town.

The rally, sponsored by Bentley Motors and organized by architect Frank Solano and designer Eddie McGuire, was open only to invited members of the Benjafeld's Racing Club, an exclusive Bentley club named after founding Bentley Boys member Dudley Benjefeld. Among the invitees are seven Bentley Speed Sixes and seven Bentley 4.5 Liters including one Blower (supercharged) model. The entrants were selected from many different countries including the U.S., UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Denmark.

Founded in 1919, Bentley was a major contender in international endurance racing in the 1920s, with five wins at Le Mans inside of a decade. The famous Bentley Boys, an exclusive gentleman's driving club of the same period, would often stage arduous driving events not unlike the Bentley Calista Rally to garner publicity for the automaker (as well as themselves)."
