"My father owned this car from 196? until the mid 1979s and sold it by auction through Christies at Beaulieu in the early/mid 1970s. I might be able to add some information if the owner would like to contact me and have loads of photos. Dad even let me drive it!"

1923-8 Bentley 3/4½ Litre Sports Four-Seater
Coachwork By Vanden Plas, London
Reg. No. OK 9470; Chassis No. 290; Engine No. TX 3246
Engine, four-cylinder, overhead-camshaft, monobloc, bore 100mm., stroke 140mm., capacity 4,398 c.c.: dual magneto ignition: four-speed gearbox, right-hand change: spiral bevel final drive: footbrake on four wheels, handbrake on rear wheels: suspension semi-elliptic front and rear: wheelbase 9ft. 9 1/2in.: tyre size 5.25 x 21: never catalogued in this form.
This car started life in 1923 as a T.T.Replica 3-litre chassis with Smith carburetter, A-type close-ratio gearbox, and the short 9ft. 9£in. wheelbase common also to its successor, the famous 'Red Label' Speed Model. The enamel of the radiator badge on T.T.Replicas was, however, blue. Front-wheel brakes of Perrot type, working in 16in. drums, were standard on Bentleys from mid-1923, and these are fitted to the car. A previous owner has fitted it with a 4½ litre engine and D-type gearbox. Other mechanical modifications include a lightened flywheel, twin S.U carburetters of modern type, and twin electric fuel pumps in place of an Autovac. Bodywork is the classic Vanden Plas open four-seater of panelled type with cutaway driver's side and externally-located handbrake lever; it has a hood, a non-original single-panel windscreen, and non-original headlamps with a lower-than-standard mounting. Also non-original are the angular mudguards at front and rear.
The car has been in its present ownership for twenty years, having taken part in the Bentley Drivers' Club Rally to Le Mans in 1969, and in a subsequent French rally to Aubusson. Condition of the engine is described as good, with a sound chassis and transmission, though the gearbox is noisy. Condition of electrics, body and trim is fair.
